Know Your Town Code

Municipalities have enacted various local laws regulating the rental of residential properties. These local laws impact the right to legally rent, the time periods of rentals and the ability to collect rent in legal proceedings. The regulations vary according to the municipality but it must be noted that some require registration before listing the property for rent or having a permit before renting. Failure to comply can lead to fines imposed by the municipality and there have been adverse decisions against landlords in civil cases as well. We advise both landlords and tenants to review the regulations regarding rental permits in the municipality in which they are planning to rent before entering into a lease.
