A Local’s Guide to the Best Hamptons Farmers Markets
The Hamptons is a mecca of bountiful fresh produce. Fresh herbs. Fresh flowers. Fresh leafy greens. Great farm friends. So, whether you're stocking up for a stay out East or snagging some summer veg on the way home, here are the best Farmers Markets and Farm Stands not to be missed.
Babinski Farm
WainscotA Hamptons classic. Their corn is famous. I'm a corn guy, what can I say? But the true highlight is their tomatoes—especially the large beefsteak red and yellow varieties. These tomatoes often end up in other markets around the east end, and their buckets of fresh produce are a summer countdown highlight. Do yourself a favor: buy a few and make enough tomato sauce to last through winter.
Balsam Farms
Montauk + AmagansettBalsam Farms is my go-to. It's everyone's go-to. Their quality, variety, and consistency are unparalleled. From July to September, I can build an entire menu around what's available, with new, exciting items popping up all the time. And the herbs? Chef's kiss. xx
Amber Waves Farms
Amagansett + East HamptonAmber Waves is a dream for any home cook. Although the indoor setup can be tricky to navigate in a rush, it's worth the time to browse. They source a variety of items from other locations, clearly marking what's grown on-site. Their spring flowers and gardening supplies are the best in the area. I love grabbing a bean and cheese or Sunbutter roll-up for a snack before heading to a gig, or enjoying a bottle of wine at one of their picnic tables.
Serene Green
Sag HarborWhen working with clients in Sag or Bridge, Serene Green is a must-visit. Their easy-to-navigate setup offers a great selection of pantry items, prepared goods, frozen offerings, fresh local products, and high-quality meats and seafood. Local labels are clearly marked, and their local cheeses and baked goods are not to be missed. Also, ask about their “Seconds” for slightly bruised produce at a discount. And don't forget the Coffee Truck!
Dale and Bette's Produce
Sag HarborThis hidden gem, located in the front yard of Dale and Bette's house just outside Sag Harbor Village, is a throwback to the countless farm stands of my childhood. Their strictly local offerings, especially the bagged greens, are fantastic. It's a great stop if you're unsure what's for dinner. Payment is on the honor system, so bring cash.
Pikes
SagaponackPikes is one of the most idyllic stands in the Hamptons, located right on the farm. Sometimes you can see people loading produce from the rows directly to the stand. They offer all the classic local fruits and veggies, along with delicious bicolor corn. Don't leave without an extra pint of Sungolds for the ride home.
Crowley's Farmstand
SagaponackIf you shopped here in 2004-2005, a 13-year-old me might have bagged your picks. This local family-run farmstand, located on their beautiful plot on Parsonage Lane, is where I learned the standard for local flowers' beauty. They offer honey and eggs gathered less than 100 yards away and pies sourced from local bakeries.
Marilee/Foster Farm
SagaponackMarilee's feels like a storybook with hand-drawn characters for each fruit and vegetable. Their variety of tomatoes—striped, purple, green, in all shapes and sizes—embody the taste of summer. They also offer heirloom options and source amazing bread and baked goods. Check out their CSA programs and collaborations by joining their mailing list.
Stone's Throw
SagaponackAs the last stop before the beach on Sagg Main Street, Stone's Throw was introduced to me while working in local kitchens. They specialize in wholesale organic farming and offer local grains. If wholesale isn't your thing, try their CSA or check out their flowers.
Halsey Farm
Water MillWhile I don't often find myself near Halsey Farm, it's worth the trip. Their array of colorful carrots and stacks of lettuce are both a visual and culinary delight. Halsey Farm is so organized, making shopping easy while offering a variety of fun items you won't find elsewhere. It's also a great spot for your gardening needs.
North Sea Farms
SouthamptonNorth Sea Farms' sign, “A small farm with a little bit of everything,” couldn't be more accurate. This family-run operation started with selling cookies, now known as Tate's of Southampton. They specialize in chicken and eggs but offer a full-service stand with clearly labeled local and farm-grown items.
Green Thumb
Water MillFeatured on Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa show, Green Thumb has been Certified Organic for as long as I can remember. Conveniently located on Montauk Highway, it's a one-stop shop offering unique fruits and veggies, baked goods, and gardening supplies. This third-generation family farm has helpful and informative staff. Check their harvest calendar online to see what's available.
